a brand new look with an age-old tradition
Much like the intricate inlay of Indian woodwork, Mehndi
is body art, painted onto parts such as ankles and palms
in designs ranging from the symbolic to whimsical. Using
the paste derived from the Henna plant, the surface
of the skin is temporarily stained creating a terracotta-
or ebony-colored design.
Mehndi became popular in the 12th century in India and
Pakistan as a form of self-embellishment to mark happy
occasions such as weddings. Now, it's becoming a popular
trend for many modern women, especially younger ones.
"Teens love it because it looks like a tattoo and
parents love it because it’s not permanent," says
Chetna Sangani, a Toronto-based Mehndi artist.
Sangani suggests Mehndi as a perfect addition to a bridal
manicure. "It’s soothing for the nerves and a symbol
of good luck." Keeping with tradition, the bride
can bring her entourage to be decorated as well. The
process of doing Mehndi was (and still is) very social,
and it’s a great opportunity for the bride to spend
time with friends and family. The entire procedure takes
2–4 hours, depending on the intricacy of the design.

Mehndi
(or mehendi or mehandi) is the application of henna
as a temporary form of skin decoration, most popular
in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia as
well as expatriate communities from these areas. It
is typically employed for special occasions, particularly
weddings. It is usually drawn on the hands and feet,
where the designs will last the longest due to the fact
that it only penetrates the dead cells of the stratum
corneum.
The
patterns of mehndi are typically quite intricate, and
predominantly applied to brides before wedding ceremonies.
However, traditions in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,
and Sudan sometimes expect bridegrooms to be painted
as well. In Rajasthan (northwest India), where mehndi
is a very ancient folkart, the grooms are given designs
which are often as elaborate as those for brides.
Mehndi
decorations became fashionable in the West in the late
1990s, where they are sometimes called "henna tattoos".
This term isn't completely accurate, because tattoos
are defined as permanent surgical insertion of pigments
underneath the skin, as opposed to pigments resting
